“No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.”

PASADENA KITCHEN - BEFORE

BEFORE | KITCHEN

We had forgotten just how dramatic this kitchen remodel was until we recently looked (courtesy of MLS, thank you very much!) through the before pics of this house.  Fifty shades of brown and there was no Christian Gray in sight.  Heavy cabinetry and stone floors overwhelmed this kitchen,  it was time to transform this space into the glory it deserved.

Hallelujah!  Black and white is always right. New custom cabinetry stained in Benjamin Moore’s Midnight Dream is finished off with linear hardware.  Stone counters were replaced with honed marble for a clean and serene contrast to the bold punches of black.  Walls were recovered with white subway tile to continue the sleek aesthetic. By removing the oversized built ins, we were able to relocate the stove and hood to open the space to include the sun filled breakfast room.

Let the sun shine!  This light filled breakfast room was given a modern greenhouse vibe with new steel doors and window frames.  Our goal was to create an indoor outdoor space with tile from the patio spilling into the wood floors to bridge the two worlds.

Kiss my brass!  The new custom hood and sexiest of ranges from La Cornue is truly a lifetime dream of any cook.  Hardwood floors are a far cry from the previous stone tiles that allow this beauty to be the star of the kitchen. C’est magnifique, n’est pas?

These shelves tho!  Hand selected planks of reclaimed wood cut to size make open shelving a work of art.  Brass brackets from Restoration Hardware are a welcomed change from the iron versions of yesteryear. Milk glass dishes, copper accessories and vintage serving boards make every meal feel like a European holiday.

Custom shades made from unused vintage grain sacks from old Bulgarian stock help keep this sunny kitchen light and bright.  A new island includes a second sink for washing veggies.  To the right is a coffee bar as these afficianados roast their own beans!

I was thrilled to find these 1940’s Brittish pickling crocs after cherishing one I received from my mother in law years ago.  A classic vessel that allows for a carefree bouquet of wild flowers.

A counter behind the range along with the backside of the island provides ample seating to watch the magic unfold. Handmade in the USA, these ebony stools from Black Creek Mercantile can’t be beat.  And that tile you wonder?  A wave of cement beauties imported from Europe roll into the kitchen from the back patio.  Inside out, this Modern Vintage Domicile is meant to be enjoyed from all corners with doors wide open to this property’s own Shangri – La.  Stay tuned for the what’s behind the next door in this amazing remodel.

D.L.
